Acupuncture

Acupuncture is used to rebalance the body and improve health.

At Back to Balance, all acupuncture treatments are done on a Biomat; this enhances the effectiveness of the acupuncture and offers the benefits of the Biomat.

What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is the insertion of fine needles into the body at specific points in order to influence the physiological functioning of the body. These points have been mapped by the Chinese over a period of thousands of years.

What is acupuncture actually doing?
Acupuncture is based on ancient Chinese theories of the flow of Qi (Energy), pronounced Chee, and Xue (Blood), pronounced Shu, through distinct meridians/channels/pathways that cover the body. Ancient theory states that acupuncture allows Qi to flow to areas where it is deficient and away from areas where it is in excess. Therefore, acupuncture regulates and restores the body’s balance; it harmonizes the energies of the body, mind and spirit. When Qi flows freely, there is no pain, yet when it is stuck, pain exists. Acupuncture allows for the free flow of Qi.

How deep do the needles go?
Typically needles are inserted from 1/4 to 1 inch in depth. The depth and direction of the needle insertion depends on the point’s location, the problem being treated, and the patient’s age, size and constitution.

Are the needles clean?
Individually wrapped, sterile, disposable needles are used. They are disposed of after the treatment, never to be used again.

Does acupuncture hurt?
Sometimes a mild prick is felt when inserting the needle, though often this is painless. When the needle has reached the Qi, the patient should feel some cramping, heaviness, tingling, or electric sensation either around the needle or traveling up or down the affected meridian. If there is a sensation or any discomfort, it is typically mild. If there is no sensation, benefit can still be received from the acupuncture treatment.

How many treatments will I need?

This will be different for every patient depending on the severity, duration and nature of the condition. One treatment may be enough for acute conditions whereas chronic conditions may take many treatments over time to resolve. This can be discussed for your individual needs during your appointment time.

Suggestions while receiving an acupuncture treatment:
RELAX. If you have any questions about your treatment ask them as they come up. Asking questions or stating concerns will help dissipate any fear you may have so you can enjoy the treatment. Once the needles have been inserted, stay still. Changing your position or sudden movements may cause discomfort. If you are uncomfortable, let me know and adjustments can be made. If you are very uncomfortable at any point, please let me know so adjustments can be made or the treatment can be stopped.
