As a naturopathic doctor, I’ve noticed something fascinating over the years. Men can tell you the exact oil change interval for their truck, know when their lawn needs fertilizing, and have strong opinions about the best way to smoke a brisket. Yet when it comes to their own bodies, many operate under a simple philosophy: “If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it.”
The human body doesn’t always send a dramatic warning light before something needs attention; we don’t come with an automatic “check engine” light.
Unfortunately we live in a world where society has conditioned many men to power through fatigue, ignore aches and pains, and dismiss symptoms as just part of getting older. While resilience is admirable, there’s a difference between being tough and being neglectful.
Here’s a little secret: preventative health care is actually one of the most efficient things you can do. It’s much easier to maintain a healthy engine than rebuild one after it seizes.
To celebrate men’s health month I wanted to spend some time discussing a few health topics as they pertain to my male patient base:
1. Your Energy Shouldn’t Disappear When You Turn 40
One of the most common concerns I hear is, “Doc, I just don’t have the energy I used to.”
While aging does bring changes, feeling exhausted all the time isn’t a mandatory part of getting older. Poor sleep, chronic stress, nutritional deficiencies, hormone imbalances, lack of movement, and blood sugar issues can all contribute to low energy.
Many men assume they’re simply getting older when, in reality, their body is waving a white flag and asking for support.
Think of fatigue as your body’s version of a politely worded email. Ignore enough of them, and eventually you’ll get a much more urgent message.
2. Stress: The Silent Health Saboteur
Many men are masters of compartmentalization.
Work stress? Put it in a box.
Financial concerns? Another box.
Family responsibilities? Yet another box.
The challenge is that your body doesn’t always know those boxes exist.
Chronic stress can affect sleep, digestion, blood pressure, mood, hormone balance, immune function, and energy levels. Even if your mind says, “I’ve got this,” your physiology may be telling a different story.
One of the healthiest things a man can do is develop a stress-management strategy that actually works for him. For some, that’s exercise. For others, it’s fishing, hiking, meditation, woodworking, or simply turning off notifications for an hour.
The goal isn’t to eliminate stress. It’s to stop stress from becoming your full-time roommate.
3. The Sleep Conversation Nobody Wants to Have
Let’s be honest: many men wear sleep deprivation like a badge of honor.
“I only need five hours.”
“I’ll sleep when I’m dead.”
“I’ve been running on coffee and determination for years.”
Your body respectfully disagrees.
Quality sleep supports hormone production, immune function, cardiovascular health, cognitive performance, mood, recovery, and weight management. In other words, it’s doing far more than just helping you feel rested.
If sleep were a supplement, it would be the best-selling product in the world.
4. Your Annual Check-Up Is Not a Sign of Weakness
Here’s a radical thought: getting routine health screenings isn’t admitting defeat.
It’s gathering information.
You wouldn’t drive across the country without occasionally checking the dashboard. Your health deserves at least the same level of attention as your vehicle.
Regular evaluations can identify concerns before they become serious problems and help establish a baseline for your long-term health.
This June, I encourage every man reading this to choose one health habit to improve.
Maybe it’s:
- Scheduling that overdue check-up.
- Going for a 20-minute walk each day.
- Prioritizing seven to eight hours of sleep.
- Adding vegetables to more meals.
- Starting a simple strength-training routine.
- Managing stress more intentionally.
Small actions performed consistently create remarkable results over time.
Men’s Health Month isn’t about becoming perfect. It’s about becoming proactive.
Your body has carried you through every challenge, every achievement, every adventure, and every ordinary Tuesday. It deserves a little maintenance.
So this month, give yourself the same care, attention, and investment you’d give anything else that’s important to you. Health isn’t just about adding years to your life, it’s about adding life to your years. We would love to assist you on your health journey; give us a call at 970-963-6500.
