Did you know magnesium is required for over 300 enzymes to function in the body? This means it is utilized by almost every body system and is vital for optimal health.
Magnesium is a mineral that is found in our soil, and therefore predominantly found in whole unprocessed foods such as legumes, beans, nuts, grains and some fruits. Due to ongoing soil depletion from mass agriculture, our soil is not as rich in minerals as it once was. Alternatively, most western diets do not consist of many whole unprocessed foods, therefore deficiency is common. Refining and processing foods can result in an up to 85% magnesium depletion. Now more than ever it is important to pay attention to our mineral intake.
Magnesium deficiency symptoms include fatigue, irritability, weakness, disrupted sleep, insomnia, muscle tightness/spasms, painful and heavy periods, constipation, high blood pressure, cardiomyopathy, sugar cravings, poor nail growth, dull skin and hair, and anxiety.
There is a reason this mineral is one of my favorites to supplement; the benefits are numerous and widespread. Some of the benefits are as follows:
1. Magnesium helps to regulate the absorption of calcium and is vital to the structural integrity of bones and teeth.
2. Magnesium helps promote deep and restful sleep.
3. Do you suffer from constipation? Magnesium can help regulate your bowels.
4. Magnesium can help relax smooth muscles and aid in muscle recovery.
5. Magnesium can be used to aid in anxiety and stress reduction.
There are many different kinds of magnesium, and each kind has its own individual uses. For example, Magnesium sulfate is the main ingredient in epsom salt and is used topically during a bath to relax muscles and draw out toxins.
