Rising like a Phoenix from the Ashes
Unexplained Infertility, or ‘Idiopathic Infertility’, is the default diagnosis when medical evaluations don’t determine why a couple cannot get pregnant. According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), approximately 30% of people facing fertility challenges are diagnosed with unexplained infertility—push your jaw back up.
Being told, ‘We don’t know why you cannot get pregnant’ by an expert in their field is disheartening to say the least. And you’re not alone in that sentiment. The diagnosis doesn’t sit well with me either, because here’s the thing, like the sunflowers in the fields and the fish in the sea, we are meant to procreate. The survival of our species depends on it. Not to state the obvious or anything…
The way I see it, there’s always a reason why people cannot conceive. Most often there are answers waiting to be discovered through deeper investigation. Intensive patient interviews and advanced functional laboratory testing often uncover the cause. And, as I like to say (broken-record-style),
“When we have a cause, we have a compass”.
Rather than walking aimlessly though the deep dark woods like ________(insert fairy tale character of choice) hoping and praying for a miracle, we can direct our energies and resources towards action steps that build up our fertile foundations. Obviously, we continue to pray for that miracle baby but this time with a revitalized hope. When we have a clearer path forward about how to tend to our unique “soils”, our gardens will flourish.
Our bodies are smart. They bypass pregnancy when the terrain isn’t conducive for growing a healthy human and a lot of things in modern day life get in the way of that; toxins, suboptimal reproductive microbiomes, nutrient depletion and stress to name a few. When we tend to our foundational health prior to conception, there are fewer complications in pregnancy and babies are healthier as well. Oh! And your grandchildren benefit from your hard work as well because: EPIGENETICS!!! More on that to come….
